Punta Meliso – Santa Maria di Leuca Lighthouse

This is the point under the lighthouse. According to popular belief, it divides the Ionian Sea from the Adriatic. On this point the Colonia Scarciglia is clearly visible, a classic example of construction from the Fascist era. Built to accommodate children with tuberculosis, but now it is in a state of neglect. Under this building you can see the Cazzafri caves, they owe their name to the white foam that forms in this stretch of sea during the winter storms.

The lighthouse dominates the landscape in its position. 102 meters above sea level and 47 meters from the base, it is the main protagonist of the panorama of Santa Maria di Leuca. Seen from the sea it is even more impressive and its vision transmits safety to all the sailors who pass off the coast of Leuca. The basilica of Santa Maria di Leuca de finibus terrae is located a few meters from the lighthouse. The gaze of pilgrims and tourists who look out at the Sanctuary lookout is captivated by the beauty of the bay of Leuca enclosed by the two points, Punta Ristola and Punta Meliso.
