The Basilica of Santa Maria di Leuca

The promontory is home to the Basilica of the Madonna de Finibus Terrae (“End of the Earth”), a pilgrimage site for centuries.
The Basilica stands on the site of an ancient Roman Temple dedicated to Minerva. According to legend, the temple collapsed when Saint Peter landed here during his journey to Rome. In mid-August, the tradition comes alive: the statue of the Virgin is carried in procession through the streets and then placed on a boat to parade along the coast to Marina di San Gregorio, concluding the celebration with a spectacular fireworks display.
The Lighthouse
The landmark that identifies Santa Maria di Leuca for miles around is The Lighthouse. With its octagonal base, it stands nearly 50 meters tall and rises over 100 meters above sea level. Built around 1860 on a previous watchtower, it remains one of the most important lighthouses in Italy.

The Waterfall
Santa Maria di Leuca is also the terminal point of the Apulian Aqueduct, a massive engineering work completed in 1941. To celebrate the completion of the project, a monumental artificial waterfall was built, flanked by a staircase of 300 steps and a Roman column.
The staircase is accessible to everyone and connects the promontory of the Basilica/Lighthouse area directly with the marina. In summer, the area is very busy, and it is recommended to explore on foot to enjoy the views and local bars.
The Christ the King Church

The church, in Apulian Gothic style, was completed only forty years after the laying of the first stone. It consists of three naves, with a central nave 30 meters long, making it an architecturally significant example in the heart of the town.
The 19th-Century Villas of Santa Maria di Leuca
The major development of Santa Maria di Leuca took place after 1874, when engineer Giuseppe Ruggeri began the construction of elegant summer residences. The first was Villa Meridiana, named for the sundial on its façade, now a historic feature of the promenade.
Many other villas followed, commissioned by noble families and designed in various styles: classical, Moorish, and Renaissance. These residences, together with the promenade and viewpoints, define the timeless elegance of Leuca’s waterfront.
The Sea Caves
Santa Maria di Leuca is famous for its sea caves hidden among the cliffs, such as Grotta Porcinara and Grotta del Diavolo. The best way to discover them is by sea. Daily excursions depart from the marina to admire the most spectacular geological formations along the coast.
