Three Doors Cave: The Natural Icon of Santa Maria di Leuca
Three Doors Cave is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular and photographed cavities along the entire Salento coastline. Located on the western coast, it takes its name from its monumental structure: three majestic rock arches opening onto the sea, serving as natural entrances to an interior full of charm and history.
Architecture and Seabeds
With a vault reaching about 8 meters in height, the cave offers an imposing and airy space. The seabed’s formation is varied and captivating:
Depth and Colors: Inside, the rocky seabed remains at about 2–3 meters deep, perfect for admiring the water’s clarity. Moving outward, the seabed becomes sandy and the depth gradually increases, offering shades of deep blue.
The Entrances: Of the three natural passages, the central one is the easiest, as it is free of protruding rocks on the seabed.

Light Play and Hidden Cavities
Visiting Three Doors Cave during the day allows you to witness extraordinary light effects. Sunlight, filtering through the three openings, reflects off the limestone walls and seabed, creating ever-changing atmospheres. Exploring the interior carefully, you can spot additional small cavities and recesses that make the structure even more complex and mysterious.
The Cave Through the Seasons
The beauty of this place changes with the passing of time. In summer, the calm waters of the bay make it a safe and paradisiacal stop for boats. In winter, however, the cave becomes part of a wild scene: from the Punta Ristola viewpoint, you can admire spectacular waves crashing against its arches, creating clouds of white foam and showcasing nature’s millennia-old power.
