Cave of the Little Lake (Well’s Mouth): between light and slippery rocks
In Santa Maria di Leuca we often call it Bocca del Pozzo, but the name “Cave of the Little Lake” better explains what you will find once inside: a natural pool of brackish water hidden in the heart of the cliff.
What makes this place special?
It is not the usual cave where you go in, look around, and leave. Here, the wow effect comes from an underwater tunnel: sunlight passes through beneath the water and illuminates the inner pool with a blue color that looks almost unreal. The water is a mix of seawater and freshwater seepage, which makes it cooler and more distinctive than the outside.

An honest warning: watch where you step.
We need to be clear: reaching the inner pool is not for everyone.
- The climb: there is a section of rock to climb that can be quite a challenge.
- The danger: the rocks are constantly wet and therefore extremely slippery. Do not venture in barefoot or wearing flip-flops; if you don’t have a minimum level of agility and the right shoes (rock shoes with good grip), it is better to enjoy the view from the boat.

We often pass by during our outings toward the west. It is one of our favorite stops because, although it is close to Leuca, it still retains a wild character. If the sea is calm and the day is right, the light effect in the tunnel is one of those things you take home as the main memory of your holiday.
