The cave’s name preserves an intriguing story from Leuca’s oral tradition. “Mesciu Gianni,” which in the local dialect means Master Giovanni, was a figure who frequented this inlet regularly.
According to the tales of old fishermen, Giovanni was so protective of this stretch of coast that he claimed exclusive rights to fish there. To deter rivals, he even boasted of having dug the cave with his own hands. As evidence of this quirky story, inside the cavity on the right wall, a pile of stones and debris is still visible, which, according to the legend, are the remnants of his “work.”
