Grotta del Drago: The Giant of the Western Coast in Santa Maria di Leuca
The Grotta del Drago represents one of the most fascinating and iconic stops of any boat excursion in Santa Maria di Leuca. Located along the Western Coast (Ionian), it is famous for being the deepest cavity of this stretch of coastline, extending for a full 50 meters into the depths of the limestone rock.
The Architecture of Nature
Entering the cave, you are welcomed by a majestic circular structure with a flattened vault. In the center, an enormous natural stone pillar seems to support the entire vault, creating a unique scenic effect. The clarity of the water, enhanced by the shallow rocky seabed, offers plays of light and shades of turquoise that make the atmosphere almost magical.
“Living” Walls: Between Moray Eels and Crocodiles
What makes a visit to the Grotta del Drago unforgettable is pareidolia (the ability to see familiar shapes in the rocks):
On the left, looking upward, a rocky outcrop clearly resembles the profile of a moray eel or a large fish.
On the right, an emerald green rock formation evokes the silhouette of a huge crocodile resting on the water’s surface. It is from these mysterious and legendary shapes that the cave draws its evocative name.
Beyond the Cave: Toward Felloniche
This cave marks the last major jewel of the Ionian side before reaching Felloniche Bay. Continuing the navigation, the coastline softens, giving way to golden beaches and crystal-clear waters ideal for a refreshing swim stop.
